Hot chocolate bombs are winter magic in a mug. Just add steaming dairy-free milk and this delicious holiday drink explodes! Vegan Peppermint Hot Chocolate Bombs use vegan chocolate, marshmallows, and peppermint for a fun and festive holiday drink.
The perfect hot chocolate bomb is well-sealed and has plenty of flavors and fillings. I’ve seen quite a few commercial hot chocolate bombs, and they seem like a ball of hardened chocolate, so they take a lot of hot liquid and patience to actually open up. I was inspired to make my own because I couldn’t find a local business making vegan hot chocolate bombs.
In my opinion, the key to an amazing hot chocolate bomb is tempered vegan chocolate and generous sweets. I’m talking cocoa powder, marshmallows, and peppermint candy inside.
Tempered chocolate is shiny and smooth, and hardens perfectly without multiple coats. It’s important to seal a hot chocolate bomb properly- and with tons of holiday fillings- to get that awesome “explosion”.
How do you temper vegan chocolate?
Tempering chocolate gives will give your hot chocolate bombs a shiny, smooth. The key is to heat the chocolate on low medium/low heat, slowly and stir often. I’ve tempered chocolate chips and bars, it always works out when they are finely chopped.
- To temper chocolate in the microwave add a little over half of the chocolate you need in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 1-minute increments. Stir after each minute, and by the 2nd or 3rd rotation, the chocolate should be melted. After that, add the remaining chocolate and stir until completely melted.
- To temper chocolate on the stove you’ll need a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl sitting on top about 2 inches of boiling water. Set the water to a simmer, then add a little over half the chocolate you need. Stir constantly, and add the remaining chocolate when it’s melted.
How do you make a hot chocolate bomb stick together?
After your tempered chocolate has hardened, it’s time to meld them together. Microwave a plate for 1 minute. Next, lightly press the circular edges on the hot plate, then to each other. You’ll want to have your filling ingredients nearby so they can be added quickly.
If you notice any gaps, separate the half-spheres and soften the edges on the hot plate again. You may also take a small spoon or silicone brush and add some extra melted chocolate to fill them in. I left a small space in each of my chocolate bombs so the hot milk can get inside the bomb (and melt it) more quickly.
Can I make a hot chocolate bomb without a mold?
Yes! If you don’t have a hot chocolate bomb mold, use common kitchen items like an egg, Nespresso pod, or ice cube mold. I bought my silicone molds from In The Kitchen (currently sold out), but you can find similar ones online.
What add-ins can I add to my hot chocolate bombs?
Add whatever you like! I used cocoa powder, Dandies’ mini marshmallows, and crushed candy canes in my Vegan Peppermint Hot Chocolate bombs. Sprinkles, spices (Pumpkin Spice anyone?), or sea salt would all taste amazing.

Hot Chocolate bombs are a fun holiday gift for others or to treat yourself. Vegan chocolate, marshmallows, and peppermint explode to make this classic drink Insta-worthy!
Details
4 (3 inch wide)
45 minutes
15 minutes
Ingredients
4 cups dairy-free milk
3/4 cup (130 grams) chocolate chips mix bar, finely chopped
1/4 cup cocoa powder or hot cocoa mix
1 bag of mini marshmallows
4 candy canes, broken up
other fillings, if desired (get creative!)
Directions
- Chop chocolate chips/bar and candy candy canes separately. To make less of a mess, crush them with a heavy jar when they’re in a sealed plastic bag.
- Temper chocolate in the microwave or stovetop. Stir often.
- When chocolate is completely melted, use a spoon or silicone brush to coat the inside of the sphere with tempered chocolate. Don’t forget to thoroughly coat the edges.
- Next, place the mold in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Once hardened, carefully remove half spheres from the mold.
- Microwave a plate, uncovered, for 1 minute.
- Gently press the edge of half sphere to the hot plate. Do the same with its pair.
- Add 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder or hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, and peppermint. If you have a different filling idea, this is your chance to experiment!
- Heat dairy-free milk in the microwave or stovetop. To make sure the bomb really “explodes”, the temperature should be steaming but not near-boiling.
- Serve in a mug by placing the hot chocolate bomb inside, then pouring about 8 ounces of the heated dairy-free milk. Watch and enjoy!
It’s a little silly how this one trend has completely taken over the internet, yet I’m here for it! 2020 has been a difficult year, with light moments hard to find. If these hot chocolate bombs bring you joy, there’s nothing wrong with that.
I will personally be making and drinking them beyond Christmas!
