Jump to RecipeWhat can I spike hot chocolate with?
If you’re looking to add a kick to your hot chocolate, there’s no shortage of options. If you want it to be boozy, bourbon, rum, whiskey, or red wine would all complement the drink’s sweetness and richness. Non-alcoholic ways to make your hot chocolate more fun, you could add cold brew coffee (as I did in this video), cinnamon, peppermint, or vegan vanilla ice cream.
Are marshmallows vegan?
As I explain here, marshmallows that don’t use animal products are not the default. Most marshmallows get that yummy, fluffy texture from gelatin– sourced from the skin, bones, and connective tissues of animals. Eek!
Luckily, vegan marshmallows exist, and they are delicious! I’ve found vegan marshmallows at Trader Joes, T.J. Maxx, and Whole Foods. You can also get them online through Thrive Market. If you’re new to Thrive Market, use my code for 25% off your first order!

1 cup dairy-free milk or water
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1.5 tablespoon diary-free chocolate (for melting)
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 whiskey or coffee (optional)
vegan marshmallows
1 tablespoon aquafaba
additional chocolate chips (for topping)

- Heat dairy-free milk in a saucepan on medium heat. If using microwave method, microwave for 1 minute, let rest, and then 30 seconds.
- After milk is warmed (around 120°F/50°C), add cocoa powder, chocolate, and sweetener.
- Whisk until ingredients are well-combined. If making on the stove, move to low heat.
- Place vegan marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat at 30-second intervals, making sure they expand, but don’t burn or pop.
- When marshmallows are just beginning to toast, take out of microwave and pour in aqufaba. Whisk until a whip is form.
- Take hot chocolate off stovetop and pour into cup. If you microwaved your hot chocolate, it may need another 30 seconds to fully heat up.
- Top hot chocolate with coffee or whiskey (optional), then whipped marshmallows. Add more chocolate if desired.
